One of the most scenic locations in Idukki, Parunthumpara is a small village in Kerala’s Idukki district. The word “Parunthumpara” literally means Eagle Rock in Malayalam. It is located near the region of Vagamon en route to Peerumedu in Idukki.

It is from here that the legendary ‘makarajyothi’ lamp of Sabarimala is seen by pilgrims who throng the temple of Lord Ayappan at Sabarimala. The major attractions of Parunthumpara are Suicide Point and a rock called ‘Tagore Head’, which is named after India’s most famous bards, Sri Rabindranath Tagore. The region of Thekkady is at a driving distance of 6 kilometers from Peerumedu, 25 kilometers from Thekkady and 3 kilometers from the NH 220 ( Kottayam Kumily Road).

One can catch a bird’s eye view of a vast expanse of lush green forest lands and low-lying plains. The location is ideal for those who want a breath of fresh air while taking in the majestic beauty of the location. One must be advised not to venture along the steep hill faces as the deep ravines may prove fatal. The region is an ideal stopover for tourists who come from Kumarakom to Thekkady.
