Imagine a fairytale setting of a dense forest, flowing streams and rivulets bordered by towering rocky hills and a breathtaking waterfall. Sounds perfect doesn’t it? Well, one can find this sort of perfection at the Suruli Falls, a place that could rival the most picturesque and fairy tale landscapes known to man’s imagination.
Located near Cumbum in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, the Suruli Falls is nestled in the dense forest with a curtain like rock face for a backdrop.
The water that falls from a staggering height of 150 feet resembles a silver ribbon that was unfurled by the Gods. There is a small pool that is frothing with the sheer force of the water that originates from the falls. This water flows a short distance from the pool only to cascade down another 40 feet to the Suruli River, which originates in the lovely Meghamalai mountain range.
The Suruli Falls also finds its place in ancient mythology too. The Pothigai Hills or Agasthyamalai which is home to the Suruli Falls, are said to have balanced the world during the marriage of Lord Shiva in Mt. Kailash. There is a close resemblance between Mount Kailash and the Pothigai Hills. It is also believed that the ‘Tiru Kalyana Teertham’ at Pothigai Hills attracted saints who come all the way from the lofty Hilmalayas.
What makes for the Suruli Falls to be a great attraction is the fact that the falls can be viewed throughout the year. However it’s during the monsoons from June to October that the Suruli Falls take on an ethereal appeal. As a tourist one can immerse himself or herself in the cool waters of the falls and there are facilities for both men and women to bathe separately. Every year the Ramil Nadu Tourism Department organizes the popular ‘Summer Festival’ near the Suruli Falls.

Guests can also visit the the nearby Kailasanathar Cave Temple and the Velappar Temple. The Kailsasnathar Temple is located nearly 800 metres above the falls and there is a natural spring here whose waters are believed to have healing powers according to ancient legend. For those with a n interest in history, there are 18 caves nearby that are stunning demonstrations of the brilliance of Indian rock-cut architecture of the 18th century. Close to Kailasanathar Temple is a famous ‘dargah’ named after Abubacker Masthan, whose body is buried here.
There is also the Suruli Velappar Temple which is shaped like an ‘Om Pranava’. When one meditates in this temple, one can hear the ‘Om’ Mantra, an experience that will truly touch your soul.
The Suruli Falls offer one a mystical and spiritual experience. It offers more than what a traditional tourist destination can offer. It is up to you to take what you can from this experience.
